Northwest Angle Area Fishing Report- Pre MN Opener

At the Angle, the Minnesota opener is officially "on ice".  This was the last clear satellite image of the lake from last week.  The actual ice-out process is farther along than this shot shows, but we are at least a week out from any real travel on the lake from the mainland.  Flag I. and Oak I. have the only navigable water in our area right now, so the people out there will be able to get some fishing in this weekend.  For those able to get on the water, anchoring up and jigging with minnows around Soldier's Point should be a pretty solid bet.

Northwest Angle Area Fishing Report- Late Ice

It’s been a good winter season, and now it’s time to watch the ice melt at the Angle! We hit the ice a couple of times in April with the snowmobiles and had a great time icing the crappies and walleye. Both the size and numbers were of fish caught were exceptional, which is why we love fishing late ice! As far as the melt goes, the areas with current are opening up, but most of the lake is still encased in a deep layer of ice. It will be with us for a while, definitely past the Minnesota opener!

Northwest Angle Area Fishing Report- February 24th

In the Northwest Angle and Islands, the February bite has continued to be strong.  The 27-30 foot range on the mud and adjoining structure is best for the all day bite  for walleye and sauger, while the 18-22 foot waters are good morning and evening for mostly walleye and perch.  Both areas are producing limits.  A lively minnow under a bobber is even producing walleye at night, between 11pm and 4am on rattle reels.  In Ontario waters,  perch, crappies and walleye are coming out of 30-36 feet.  Trout have been more active with some nice size lakers coming in.

Northwest Angle Area Fishing Report- Jan. 20

Action is good in the Little Traverse area near Oak and Little Oak Island.  Walleye and sauger have been working the 18-25 feet of water range.  Bites have been happening very early at 7 am, and from 3 pm onward and scattered throughout the morning and midday.  There is a night bite materializing for the sleeper house guys, with walleyes coming in as late as 7-10 pm.  Eelpout are on the increase as well, showing up in both the daytime and throughout the overnight.  Northern pike are still biting.  In Ontario, walleye and crappie continue to be active.

Northwest Angle Area Fishing Report- September 19

            In Canadian waters, the walleyes are moving into fall patterns; dropoffs outside shallow bays, deep points, and current flow areas have all been productive.  Plan to go through a lot of bait.  There has been some nice catches of jumbo perch this week on mud areas, and the crappies have become more active with the colder weather. 

            Big pike and muskie have been showing up near the schools of walleye, and hitting on jigs and chasing fish being brought in.  Breaking out the trolling gear and making passes near schooled walleye, crappie and perch is a good alternative to casting right now.

Northwest Angle Area Fishing Report- September 11

           In Canadian waters, the recent hot weather had the walleyes using reefs in most sections of the lake; following this weekend’s cool down, the fish moved off structure in most areas. Fishing point areas or running out to reefs in the deeper water around Skeet I have been the most productive patterns in the last few days. In Minnesota waters, the Little Oak I. and Crowduck I. areas have been producing walleye.

Muskie fishermen are still seeing good numbers of follows and landing big fish.  Following the cooling weather, some of the biggest smallies in the lake have been showing up on rock points in 15 to 25 feet of water.  Crappie fishing has slowed down with the hotter weather, but should be improving soon, but the jumbo perch have been biting well in the last week.

Northwest Angle Area Fishing Report- September 4

           On the walleye scene in Canada, look for numbers of fish in the Skeet Island area; make sure to play fish you plan to release slowly when they are coming out of the deeper water up there.  In Minnesota waters, look around the Little Oak and Garden Island areas to find your walleye.

            Muskie anglers are reporting some good action and big fish lately. Shallow running cranks and bucktails have been working, and turning some big pike as well.  Smallmouth bass anglers have been catching some impressive sized bass while throwing spinnerbaits around reed beds and what’s left of the summer cabbage.  Crappie and perch are still being caught in good numbers by anglers willing to spend the time looking for them.
